Exploring challenges and opportunities surrounding climate and the environment in Africa.
Africa is particularly vulnerable to climate change. From its geographic location to a lack of resilience in key systems the stakes are high for millions across the continent. At the same time, increasing demands for energy access from a growing middle class, and the continued lack of energy for the rural poor are forcing the use of dirty, unsustainable technologies and practices. This tension between the impacts of climate change and the need for power – as well as the lack of legacy technologies in many areas – has created considerable opportunity for innovation and investment. With our environment research line, we look at the politics and policy that impact responses to climate change, the role of innovation in mitigating its impact on people’s lives, opportunities for businesses to take part in arresting climate change, and lessons that can be taken from African experiences and applied globally.
